The eligibility for UPSC exam is based on the following rules:

Academic Eligibility for Civil Services IAS Exams

The Applicant must hold a degree from any University that is recognized by the state or central government. A degree received through Correspondence Education or Distance Education. A qualification recognized by the Government of India as being equivalent to either of the above. Applicants who have given their final year graduation exam/ waiting for the results can also apply for this exam (but they will be required a proof of passing the graduation exam) before the final selection process.

UPSC Online Application Procedure

The application procedure for UPSC civil services examination has been entirely made online at the preliminary level and UPSC e-admit cards are issued which Aspirants appearing for IAS exam should download from the UPSC official website.

The Applicants applying for the IAS Exam should make sure that they satisfy all the eligibility criteria for admission to the examination. The Applicants admission to all the stages of the examination will be only conditional subject to fulfilling the above-mentioned eligibility conditions. With the issue of admission certificate to a Applicants does not indicate that the Applicant’s application has been finally accepted by the Commission. As the Commission takes up verification of eligibility criteria with the reference to the original documents only when an Applicants qualify the final round that is the Interview/Personality Test.

UPSC Vacancies 2017

In the latest notification released by the UPSC, the number of vacancies to be filled after the result of the UPSC Civil Services Examination and this includes the reservation for P.H. Category. The final number of vacancies may be changed subsequently receiving the fixed number of vacancies from Cadre Controlling Authorities. Reservation will be made for Applicants who belong to different categories like Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Physically Disabled depending on the number of vacancies as may be fixed by the Government.

UPSC Civil Services Main Examination Syllabus

The Civil Services Mains examination is in written format and aims to test the academic Intelligence and the ability of the Applicant to present the answers in a clear and proper manner. The Examination is intended to assess the overall depth and understanding of the Applicants rather than merely the range of their information and memory.

UPSC Exam Pattern 2017

The pattern of  UPSC Civil Services Main examination from 2016. Now there are 7 + 2 = 9 papers to be answered in the main examination. All of them are of descriptive type. There are two qualifying papers (i) any modern Indian language of 300 marks (ii) English of 300 marks. The marks of these two papers will not be counted in the merit list of the main examination. The Applicants is allowed to pick any one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution or English as the medium for writing the mains examination.

According to the new pattern, there is four General Studies exam each of 250 Marks with a total of 1000 Marks is made compulsory. The scope of the syllabus of General Studies papers is of degree level. There is only one optional subject to choose from the list of subjects. It comprises of two papers each of 300 marks. So the optional paper has total 600 marks. The applicant is allowed to take up literature as an optional subject “without the condition of having the same at graduation level.” The scope of the syllabus of optional paper is higher than the bachelor’s degree but lower than the master’s degree. Interview/Personality Test is of 275 Marks. Candidate can give preference of the language in which they may like to be interviewed. UPSC will make arrangement for the translators.

  1. The total mark of the written examination is 1750 Marks.
  2. The Interview/Personality Test will be of 275 marks.
  3. The Grand Total 2025 Marks


Essay – 250 Marks – To be written in the medium or language of the applicants’ choice. The candidate is required to write an essay on a specific topic.


General Studies-I 250 Marks (Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society)



General Studies -III 250 Marks (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)


General Studies -IV 250 Marks (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude)

This paper will include questions to test the Applicants attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, public life and his problem-solving approach to various issues and conflicts faced by him in dealing with society. Questions may utilize the case study approach to determine these aspects. The following broad areas will be covered.


Optional Subject – Paper I -250 Marks

The applicant may choose any one optional subject from amongst the list of subjects given below.

The applicant can give preference of the language in which they may like to be interviewed. UPSC will make arrangement for the translators.

Civil Services Mains ExamSyllabus

The written examination will consist of the following papers:

Paper A – Modern Indian language 300 Marks – Qualifying nature – Marks not counted – Passing mandatory-

Note 1: The Papers on Indian Languages and English will be of High School level and will be of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for final ranking.

Note 2: The Applicants will have to answer the English and Indian Languages papers in English and the respective Indian language.

Paper B – English -300 marks – Qualifying nature – Marks not counted- Passing mandatory

The aim of the paper is to test the Applicant ability to read and understand serious prose and to express his ideas clearly and correctly, in English and Indian Language concerned.

The pattern of questions would be broad as follows:-

(i) Comprehension of given passages

(ii) Precise Writing

(iii) Usage and Vocabulary

(iv) Brief Essay.
